Bulk Download of Fixed Infrastructure Dataset
- Release:
- Tags: API, Data Release, Improvement
Global Fishing Watch has launched a new Bulk Download API, which was designed to provide researchers and developers with an asynchronous method for efficiently accessing and downloading larger volumes of data.
API users can now:
- Download detections of offshore fixed infrastructure derived from Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 satellite imagery.
- Generate custom JSON reports by specifying region, date ranges and classification filters.
- Retrieve full dataset outputs, including raw data, geometry and metadata for each report.
About fixed infrastructure
This dataset includes detections of offshore platforms and structures from 2017 to up to three months ago, classified using deep learning models applied to SAR and optical imagery. It is identical to the dataset available in the Data Download Portal, which means it includes more comprehensive, even if sometimes noisy, data compared to what’s available via our Datasets API or in the Global Fishing Watch map.
Dataset ID: public-fixed-infrastructure-data:v1.1
Key features:
- Asynchronous access to enable large data downloads
- Possibilities to decide what data to download (data, description and/or geometry)
- Different formats like CSV or JSON
How to start with the new API
Access fixed infrastructure through the Bulk Download API using:
- POST endpoints to generate filtered region-specific reports
- GET endpoints to query and retrieve results in structured formats
- Download assets including README, DATA and GEOM components
Refer to our Bulk Download API documentation for full usage examples and supported query parameters. Also, explore our Postman examples.
Important notes:
- The dataset includes noisy data and unfiltered detections from regions such as Chile, Canada and Norway.
- For filtered infrastructure data, refer to the public-fixed-infrastructure-filtered:latest dataset in the Datasets API.
- Full data caveats can be found here.
- What’s next? More datasets will be added to the Bulk Download API, including AIS apparent fishing effort, vessel identity and events data.
