2024 August – Marine Manager – Work together in shared workspaces, new analysis features and more

A dialog box titled Save the Current Workspace shows fields for name, time range, and access settings. The workspace name is Ascension - MPA Management Plan - Supporting Datasets. A Create New Workspace button is at the bottom.
Global Fishing Watch Marine Manager portal shared dynamic workspaces with optional password protection

Global Fishing Watch has released updates to the marine manager portal to  support MPA managers, researchers and non-profit organizations working toward the sustainable management of our oceans.

In addition to the already existing datasets and functions, anyone can now:

  • Collaborate with others in a shared workspace.
    • Collaborate with your colleagues within one workspace, by providing password access for others to either view or edit the same workspace.
    • Add annotations to any location on the map.
    • The shared workspaces can support your work in multiple ways:
      • As a manager, share a proposed MPA plan with stakeholders for their feedback.
      • As a researcher, share data with your colleagues.
  • Create an analysis and download data for more than one area.
    • Generate an analysis for more than one area at the same time. Your analysis will include statistics on the total sum of areas and can be used for MPA networks.
  • Drop a pin in a location of interest.
    • Alongside area analysis reports, you can now analyze human activity and environmental data around a specific location for your time range of interest.
  • Filter the vessel presence layer by speed of vessels.
    • The vessel presence layer, which is a culmination of all vessels for your time range of interest, can be filtered based on the speed of vessels.
    • As speed is a proxy for many types of activities, this can enable you to better understand vessel patterns:
      • Review speed restrictions within a specific area.
      • Review vessel location in relation to animal movement patterns.
  • Filter individual tracks for speed and depth.
    • Any individual vessel track can now be filtered for speed or depth below the vessel to enable you to better understand individual vessel patterns.
  • Benefit from general platform improvements.
    • We have implemented general improvements across many aspects of Marine Manager based on user feedback, including:
      • Direct access to an analysis report from the Marine Manager homepage.
        • For any area of interest, go directly to see high level statistics on the human activity, select ‘see report’, instead of ‘go to map’.
