Christopher Costello

Professor of Environmental and Resource Economics, Bren School of Environmental Science & Management at UC, Santa Barbara
Chris co-directs the Sustainable Fisheries Group at UCSB which develops innovative science and economics to improve the sustainability of marine resources and communities around the world. Chris earned a BA from UC Berkeley, a MA from Oregon State University, and a PhD from UC Berkeley, and currently holds the Donald Bren Chair in Environmental Management at UC Santa Barbara.
He has worked closely with national governments and colleagues from around the world to translate his research into on-the-ground action, and frequently collaborates with researchers in disciplines outside of economics, such as data science, ecology, biogeography, and mathematics. In 2016, he was awarded a Peter Benchley Ocean Award for Excellence in Solutions. He is a trustee of the Environmental Defense Fund, serves as a science adviser to the Ocean Protection Council, and is a Research Assocaite at the National Bureau of Economic Research.
Chris’ hobbies include travel, diving, beekeeping, woodworking, wine making, and spending time with his family.
