Why can’t I find a vessel I am searching for?

Make sure the Activity Layer the vessel is in is turned on (if you are not sure which, try selecting multiple Activity Layers).  For example, if you are searching for a vessel that transmits Indonesian VMS, make sure the Indonesia VMS layer is on – otherwise, the vessel may not show up. If you are searching for a refrigerated cargo vessel, make sure you have the Encounters layer enabled.

The majority of fishing vessels in our map are commercial fishing vessels and refrigerated cargo vessels. We only display fishing vessels that our algorithms and analysts consider to be validated as fishing vessels. We improve and update our list of well-known vessels periodically. If you cannot find a specific vessel that you know is fishing or a refrigerated cargo vessel, we encourage you to send us an email to info@globalfishingwatch.org providing all the information you have on that vessel so we can review and include in the next iteration of our well-known vessel lists.

Note that vessels that do not use AIS or VMS of one of our partner countries will not show up in a search.
