As of January 28, 2025, the latest AIS data version is v3 (details about v3 are available here). The previous version, v20231026, has been deprecated. While originally scheduled for deprecation in February 2025, this was accelerated due to low usage and high maintenance costs. Please note that comparing data outputs between v20231026 and v3 is currently not possible.
For Global Fishing Watch platform Users:
Upon loading a workspace, data will no longer be displayed. You will be prompted to update your workspace to the latest v3 data, which includes feature improvements and fixed data bug issues. Please be aware that some vessel identity and activity information may have changed due to updates in vessel classification and event estimation.
For public APIs Users:
- If you are using v20231026: You will now receive 404 “not found” errors. This indicates that the v20231026 dataset is no longer available, and you must update your API requests to use the v3 data. For example, requests like public-global-fishing-effort:v20231026 will now fail.
- If you are using the latest alias: No action is required. You are already accessing the most current data and will continue to do so. More information on specific API datasets.
Why we recommend using the latest alias:
Using latest for your API requests is strongly recommended for the following reasons:
- Future-proofing: You’ll automatically receive the latest data without needing to modify your applications or processes when new versions are released.
- Immediate access to updates: All data fixes and improvements are applied to the current version (v3). latest ensures you benefit from these immediately.
- Seamless transitions: When the next major version (e.g., v4) is released, your applications will automatically transition to it.
Accessing v20231026 Data (If absolutely necessary):
If you absolutely require access to the v20231026 data, please email [email protected] with the subject “Request AIS data from version v20231026.” Clearly explain your reasons for needing this data and specify the exact data and dates required. We will make every effort to assist you.
