As the global community increasingly relies on the ocean for food, trade, and energy, the true extent of human impact on our marine environments has remained largely hidden. In this groundbreaking research, Global Fishing Watch showcases how the fusion of satellite imagery, artificial intelligence, or AI, and cloud computing is finally bringing the “world’s last frontier” into focus. By processing over two million gigabytes of satellite data, researchers have created the first comprehensive map of industrial activity across the global ocean.
The findings are a wake-up call for those responsible for managing the ocean. The data reveals that approximately three-quarters of industrial fishing vessels are “dark,” whereby they operate without ever having their locations appear in public monitoring systems. This lack of transparency poses significant challenges for managing overfishing and protecting biodiversity. In contrast, while transport and energy vessels are better documented, significant gaps in the public record still exist.
The mapping also captures a historic shift in offshore energy. For the first time, the number of offshore wind turbines has surpassed oil structures, driven by a staggering 900 percent increase in turbines in China . While fishing remains the most widespread activity, shipping and energy development are diversifying and growing at a faster rate.
By identifying hotspots of unsustainable activity and monitoring illegal fishing, these detailed maps provide the vital information needed to manage our invaluable marine resources. Transparency is the first step toward a sustainable ocean, ensuring that human use does not come at the cost of the ocean’s health.
