Las \u00e1reas de acceso preferencial (AAP) son espacios marinos designados donde los pescadores artesanales y de peque\u00f1a escala tienen acceso prioritario, generalmente mediante la restricci\u00f3n de las flotas industriales seg\u00fan el tama\u00f1o de la embarcaci\u00f3n, el tipo de arte de pesca o la distancia desde la costa. Tambi\u00e9n conocidas como zonas de exclusi\u00f3n costera (ZEC), estas \u00e1reas surgieron a finales de la d\u00e9cada de 1970 como respuesta a la incursi\u00f3n de la pesca industrial en aguas costeras. Desde entonces, <\/span>44 pa\u00edses han establecido AAP<\/span><\/a>, lo que representa un reconocimiento legal del papel social, cultural y econ\u00f3mico fundamental de la pesca artesanal.<\/span><\/p>

En una era de <\/span>creciente competencia por el espacio y los recursos costeros<\/span><\/a>, incluidas la pesca industrial y otras actividades comerciales como la energ\u00eda e\u00f3lica marina, la acuicultura y el transporte mar\u00edtimo, las AAP son sumamente relevantes porque garantizan los caladeros para millones de pescadores artesanales que proveen gran parte del marisco consumido localmente en las comunidades costeras. Al reducir la competencia con las flotas de gran escala, <\/span>las AAP pueden contribuir a sostener los medios de vida<\/span><\/a>, la seguridad alimentaria y las pr\u00e1cticas culturales, al tiempo que apoyan los compromisos nacionales con las <\/span>Directrices sobre la Pesca en Peque\u00f1a Escala<\/span><\/a> de la Organizaci\u00f3n de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentaci\u00f3n y la Agricultura (FAO) y con el <\/span>Objetivo de Desarrollo Sostenible 14.b<\/span><\/a>, cuyo prop\u00f3sito es \u201cdar acceso de los pescadores artesanales en peque\u00f1a escala a los recursos marinos y a los mercados.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

En asociaci\u00f3n con el <\/span>Laboratorio de Ecolog\u00eda Geoespacial Marina<\/span><\/a> y el Instituto <\/span>Nicholas de Energ\u00eda, Medio Ambiente y Sostenibilidad<\/span><\/a> de la Universidad de Duke, hemos incorporado una capa de referencia en el mapa de Global Fishing Watch que muestra <\/span>todas las AAP vigentes a nivel mundial<\/span><\/a>. Esta capa permite a los usuarios visualizar los pol\u00edgonos de los pa\u00edses que han designado \u00e1reas preferenciales para los pescadores de peque\u00f1a escala. El mapa de Global Fishing Watch ofrece la oportunidad de estudiar con mayor profundidad los efectos de establecer un \u00e1rea de acceso preferencial (AAP). El mapa permite a los usuarios monitorear la actividad superponiendo las trayectorias de las embarcaciones para determinar qui\u00e9n accede y pesca en estas \u00e1reas.
