El problema<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

El calamar gigante volador, o calamar de Humboldt, puede crecer hasta tres metros de largo y pesar hasta 50 kilogramos. Siendo el invertebrado marino m\u00e1s com\u00fan en el Pac\u00edfico Sudeste, este voraz depredador migra a lo largo de la costa de Am\u00e9rica Latina, desde M\u00e9xico hasta Chile.<\/span><\/p>

La demanda de calamar gigante ha ido en aumento y las capturas han crecido de manera espectacular en las \u00faltimas dos d\u00e9cadas. Esencial para las comunidades pesqueras y las econom\u00edas locales, el calamar gigante es el objetivo de m\u00e1s de 4.000 embarcaciones pesqueras costeras de Per\u00fa y Chile. Pero tambi\u00e9n atrae a cientos de embarcaciones a escala industrial del otro lado del Pac\u00edfico, principalmente de China.<\/span><\/p>

La pesca del calamar debe gestionarse con cuidado para garantizar que siga siendo sostenible. Pero hasta hace poco, ha habido poca vigilancia de estas escurridizas criaturas o de las flotas que las buscan.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

En 2020, a medida que crec\u00eda el inter\u00e9s y la actividad de las embarcaciones en el Oc\u00e9ano Pac\u00edfico Suroriental, utilizamos datos \u00f3pticos y de radar satelital para <\/span>rastrear los movimientos y el comportamiento de la flota pesquera de calamar de larga distancia<\/span><\/a>. Tambi\u00e9n cotejamos estos datos con la informaci\u00f3n registrada por la <\/span>Organizaci\u00f3n Regional de Manejo Pesquero del Pac\u00edfico Sur<\/span><\/a> (SPRFMO, por sus siglas en ingl\u00e9s), el organismo de manejo responsable de supervisar esta \u00e1rea del oc\u00e9ano.<\/span><\/p>

A trav\u00e9s de nuestros <\/span>datos y an\u00e1lisis<\/span><\/a>, se encontr\u00f3 que 615 embarcaciones a escala industrial estaban pescando en alta mar al oeste de Am\u00e9rica del Sur, pasando un total de 876.366 horas operando, lo que equivale a 94.559 d\u00edas. De estos barcos, el 95 por ciento proced\u00edan de China, y el resto enarbolaba banderas de Taipei Chino o la Rep\u00fablica de Corea. Los datos de seguimiento mostraron que cientos de estos barcos chinos pescaban hasta el borde de la Reserva Marina de Gal\u00e1pagos, una regi\u00f3n cr\u00edtica para las poblaciones de peces y la biodiversidad.<\/span><\/p>

Si bien nuestro an\u00e1lisis sac\u00f3 a la luz varios problemas, como el enmascaramiento de embarcaciones mediante el intercambio de n\u00fameros de servicios m\u00f3viles mar\u00edtimos o el uso de varios n\u00fameros, tambi\u00e9n revel\u00f3 que 16 embarcaciones estaban transmitiendo posiciones falsas, una pr\u00e1ctica conocida como suplantaci\u00f3n de identidad o \u201cspoofing\u201d, y simplemente se identificaron m\u00e1s de 80 embarcaciones utilizando datos de seguimiento de embarcaciones que no figuraban en la lista de embarcaciones activas de la SPRFMO.<\/span><\/p>

Las cosas tampoco cuadraron en lo que respecta al transbordo, una pr\u00e1ctica en la que los barcos pesqueros transfieren su captura a buques de carga refrigerados, o transportistas, en el mar. Nuestros datos identificaron 41 buques cargueros activos en 2020, cuando la SPRFMO ten\u00eda solo 12 en su lista. Esto represent\u00f3 una gran discrepancia entre los transbordos informados y lo que observamos.<\/span><\/p>

En los meses siguientes, entregamos informes detallados a los gobiernos de Ecuador, Chile y Per\u00fa, y nuestros hallazgos recibieron amplia cobertura. En 2021, vimos que la flota china se mantuvo alejada de Gal\u00e1pagos por primera vez en cinco a\u00f1os, y tambi\u00e9n se mantuvo alejada de las aguas peruanas. Esto se complement\u00f3 con una menor cantidad de embarcaciones operando en el \u00e1rea, as\u00ed como con un menor n\u00famero de irregularidades generales en lo que respecta a las embarcaciones que transmiten sus posiciones.<\/span><\/p>
