En agosto de 2017, la armada ecuatoriana intercept\u00f3 un buque carguero de bandera china, el FU YUAN YU LENG 999, en la Reserva Marina de Gal\u00e1pagos. Los congeladores de su bodega conten\u00edan 7.639 tiburones y 537 bolsas de aletas de tibur\u00f3n.<\/span><\/p>

La embarcaci\u00f3n no estaba autorizada para ingresar a las aguas de Gal\u00e1pagos, donde la tenencia de tiburones o partes de sus cuerpos es ilegal. Las muestras de ADN identificaron 12 especies de tiburones a bordo del FU YUAN YU LENG 999. Nueve de ellas se consideraron especies amenazadas seg\u00fan la<\/span> Lista Roja de la UICN<\/span><\/a>, mientras que ocho de ellas figuraron en la <\/span>lista de CITES<\/span><\/a>, la convenci\u00f3n internacional que controla el comercio internacional de especies en peligro de extinci\u00f3n.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Si bien el FU YUAN YU LENG 999 ya estaba actuando en violaci\u00f3n de la ley con solo ingresar a la Reserva Marina de Gal\u00e1pagos con tiburones a bordo, nuestros analistas pesqueros dieron evidencia de que hab\u00eda violado la ley de otras maneras.<\/span><\/p>

Utilizamos nuestros datos de seguimiento de embarcaciones y el aprendizaje autom\u00e1tico para demostrar que, una semana antes, el FU YUAN YU LENG 999 se encontr\u00f3 con cuatro palangreros atuneros chinos en el Pac\u00edfico oriental, a unas 1.700 millas de Gal\u00e1pagos. Durante cada encuentro de 12 horas, los barcos permanecieron juntos, movi\u00e9ndose lentamente a unos 30 metros de distancia. Esto sugiere que los palangreros estaban transfiriendo su captura al buque de transporte, un proceso conocido como <\/span>transbordo<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>

La<\/span> Comisi\u00f3n Interamericana del At\u00fan Tropical<\/span><\/a> permite la pesca de tiburones en el \u00e1rea donde esto ocurri\u00f3, pero el transbordo est\u00e1 estrictamente regulado, y el FU YUAN YU LENG 999, que no tuvo otro encuentro previo durante su viaje, no estaba en la lista de buques de transporte autorizados, lo que significa que su carga era ilegal.<\/span><\/p>

Con evidencia de m\u00faltiples violaciones a la ley, el gobierno de Ecuador dict\u00f3 fuertes sentencias. El propietario del FU YUAN YU LENG 999 fue multado con 5,9 millones de d\u00f3lares, mientras que el capit\u00e1n fue condenado a cuatro a\u00f1os de prisi\u00f3n.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
