El calamar es una fuente vital de ingresos para los pescadores en Jap\u00f3n y Corea del Sur, pero desde 2003, las poblaciones de calamar en los dos pa\u00edses se han desplomado en alrededor del 80 por ciento. Ambos pa\u00edses introdujeron medidas para reducir la presi\u00f3n pesquera, pero la tendencia se mantuvo. Fue entonces cuando nos dimos cuenta de que una pregunta importante hab\u00eda quedado sin respuesta: \u00bfqu\u00e9 estaba ocurriendo en las aguas de la vecina Corea del Norte?<\/p>

A primera vista, hab\u00eda se\u00f1ales de que algo andaba mal. Se vio un gran n\u00famero de embarcaciones industriales que se dirig\u00edan hacia Corea del Norte desde China, a pesar de las sanciones de la ONU que proh\u00edben a las flotas extranjeras pescar en las aguas de dicho estado.<\/p>

Y hab\u00eda otra tendencia tr\u00e1gica: cientos de peque\u00f1os barcos pesqueros de Corea del Norte estaban varados a lo largo de la costa de Rusia: sus tripulaciones estaban desaparecidas, hambrientas o muertas.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Comenzamos a investigar el problema en 2018. Hab\u00eda pocos indicios de pesca industrial en aguas de Corea del Norte en nuestro mapa. Esto, sospech\u00e1bamos, se deb\u00eda a que los barcos se estaban volviendo \u00aboscuros\u00bb, es decir, no transmit\u00edan p\u00fablicamente su ubicaci\u00f3n ni aparec\u00edan en los sistemas p\u00fablicos de monitoreo.<\/span><\/p>

As\u00ed que tuvimos que intentar otro enfoque. Un equipo internacional de investigadores utiliz\u00f3 nuestras t\u00e9cnicas de aprendizaje autom\u00e1tico para combinar se\u00f1ales AIS con im\u00e1genes de radar y sat\u00e9lite, y <\/span>la flota oscura sali\u00f3 a la luz<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>

Encontramos m\u00e1s de <\/span>900 grandes embarcaciones de origen chino pescando en aguas de Corea del Norte<\/span><\/a>, en violaci\u00f3n de las sanciones de la ONU. Las estimaciones sugieren que capturaron casi 500 millones de d\u00f3lares en calamares voladores del Pac\u00edfico entre 2017 y 2018, con un volumen de m\u00e1s de 160.000 toneladas m\u00e9tricas, equivalente a la captura de Jap\u00f3n y Corea del Sur juntas.<\/span><\/p>

Tambi\u00e9n vimos alrededor de 3.000 embarcaciones norcoreanas de peque\u00f1a escala arrastradas a la costa en costas lejanas de Rusia y Jap\u00f3n, probablemente porque no pudieron competir con los operadores industriales que hab\u00edan inundado sus caladeros de origen. La mayor\u00eda de estos eran peque\u00f1os botes de madera, no destinados a viajes de larga distancia.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Nuestro estudio, <\/span>Iluminando las flotas pesqueras oscuras en Corea del Norte<\/span><\/a>, recibi\u00f3 atenci\u00f3n internacional por sacar a la luz este problema y, lo que es m\u00e1s importante, por ayudar a cambiar las cosas: en el a\u00f1o posterior a la publicaci\u00f3n del art\u00edculo, observamos alrededor de un 50 por ciento menos de barcos en comparaci\u00f3n con los anteriores. a\u00f1os. \u201cLa escala de la flota involucrada en esta pesca ilegal es aproximadamente un tercio del tama\u00f1o de toda la flota pesquera de larga distancia de China. Es el caso m\u00e1s grande conocido de pesca ilegal perpetrada por embarcaciones originarias de un pa\u00eds que operan en las aguas de otra naci\u00f3n. Al sintetizar datos de m\u00faltiples sensores satelitales, creamos una imagen s\u00f3lida y sin precedentes de la actividad pesquera en una regi\u00f3n notoriamente opaca\".<\/p><\/span>
