El AIS (Sistema de identificaci\u00f3n autom\u00e1tica) es un sistema que transmite la posici\u00f3n de un barco para que otros barcos est\u00e9n al tanto de la misma y as\u00ed evitar colisiones. La Organizaci\u00f3n Mar\u00edtima Internacional (OMI) exige el uso de AIS en buques de m\u00e1s de 300 toneladas brutas que realizan viajes internacionales. Muchos gobiernos nacionales han ordenado a los buques que caen fuera de la regulaci\u00f3n de la OMI que usen AIS. Cada a\u00f1o, m\u00e1s de 400,000 dispositivos AIS diferentes transmiten la ubicaci\u00f3n de embarcaciones junto con otras informaciones como identidad, rumbo y velocidad. Las estaciones terrestres y los sat\u00e9lites recogen esta informaci\u00f3n, de manera que los movimientos de un barco puedan ser rastreados incluso desde las zonas m\u00e1s remotas del oc\u00e9ano.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Aunque el uso de AIS no es obligatorio a nivel global para los barcos de pesca, se estima que las embarcaciones con AIS representan m\u00e1s de la mitad del esfuerzo de pesca a m\u00e1s de 100 millas n\u00e1uticas de la costa, y hasta el <\/span>80% de la pesca en alta mar<\/span><\/a>.
