Tony Long became the first permanent CEO of Global Fishing Watch in September, 2017. He joined the organization shortly after we were officially incorporated as an independent NGO (in April, 2017). Tony came to Global Fishing Watch from the Pew Charitable Trusts where he directed Pew’s End Illegal Fishing Program and played a key role in the development of the Eyes on the Seas project. He has a strong background in non-profit program development and fundraising and a deep understanding of vessel tracking, IUU and related technologies.

Prior to joining Pew, Tony was a commander in the Royal British Navy where he spent 27 years and served on the First Sea Lord’s strategy team, providing executive and ministerial-level defense planning and policy support to the head of the Navy, his executive board and government ministers. He also acted as the High North (Arctic) lead adviser, responsible for researching and understanding maritime security issues that arise from environmental changes in the Arctic region.

He received a master’s degree in defense studies from King’s College in London. He is based near in Oxford, England. When not working to create transparency in the fishing industry, Tony can be found on his road bike raising money for Prostate Cancer UK.
