Alex Wilson, engineering lead for Global Fishing Watch and senior software engineer at Google in London.
Alex has 20 years of experience in the software engineering field, developing everything from embedded firmware to global-scale distributed systems. He developed a passion for conservation and the environment after taking a sabbatical to study for an environmental science masters at Imperial College London. Since then he has shaped a career on the intersection of technology, machine learning and the environment. Before joining Google he worked developing advanced smart metering technologies to help reduce domestic energy consumption. At Google he has been working in close collaboration with SkyTruth: applying machine learning to conservation and developing the classification systems which enable Global Fishing Watch to identify and measure global fishing effort.
Alex holds an MSc in Environmental Science from Imperial College London, an MSc in Computation from the University of Oxford and a BSc in Physics from the University of Durham.
